Tavi Castle in Leonforte
The Castle of Tavi in Leonforte, today reduced to ruins, is the symbol of the ancient history of this place.
The date of construction of the castle is not known, it is believed that it already existed in the Byzantine period as a fortified outpost of the city of Henna and which later became an element of defense for both the Arabs and the Normans. The first written trace of the existence of the castle dates back to the mid-twelfth century. With the foundation of the city of Leonforte, the castle underwent total abandonment and progressive destruction as it lost all importance, giving up its prerogatives to the Branciforti palace built in the city.
Only a few ruins remain of the Tavi castle: a notable enclosure wall that at times merges with the natural line of the rocks on which the castle is located, two large cisterns dug into the rock and a medium-sized room with a barrel vault with lunettes.
