Mazzarino Castle
The Castelvecchio di Mazzarino, commonly called U Cannuni, i.e. the the cannon, due to its cylindrical shape that resembles a cannon, is located on a slight hill near the historic center.
The date of construction of the castle is uncertain, the first historical sources date back to 1282 when the castle was purchased by Stefano Branciforti, so it is certain that the construction dates back to before that date. In fact, it is believed that the construction of the castle took place to ensure defense against enemy attacks: its strategic location allowed control of the valleys of the Braemi and Disueri streams. The castle certainly played a fundamental role in the subsequent development of the urban nucleus which, over the years, branched off to the south of the fortress.
The castle was surrounded by walls which were strengthened during the period of Norman domination and, originally, it was formed by four cylindrical towers, which facilitated a more secure defensive control, both towards the East and towards the West, connected by crenellated walls in which the living and service areas developed, interrupted by the beauty of graceful internal courtyards. Today, what remains are the southern walls and the north and west curtains, from which one can enjoy a suggestive view of the town.
