Church of the Holy Crucifix in Piazza Armerina
The Church of the SS.mo Crocifisso in Piazza Armerina, also known as the church of the Collegiata del Crocifisso, stands at the foot of the Mira hill and with its imposing facade it imposes itself on the surrounding square.
It was built in 1785, at the behest of Pietro Paolo Trigona, on a small pre-existing church dedicated to Santa Domenica, in which the sacred image of Christ on the Cross was venerated and where a collegiate church of canons dedicated to the Holy Crucifix was born.
The facade is divided into two orders: on the first order there are three portals in Baroque style. The central one, of larger dimensions, is surmounted by a coat of arms which is believed to be that of the Trigona family or, more probably, that of the Collegiata del SS.mo Crocifisso; on the second order a large tympanum window. An architectural detail of the church is given by the unusual drum-shaped development of the dome.
The interior, with a Greek plan on a single nave with six chapels on the sides surmounted by as many small domes, has a simple and essential style.
Among the works kept inside the church, of particular value are: a seventeenth-century half-bust Ecce Homo, a wooden choir and an eighteenth-century organ and a seventeenth-century canvas depicting Santa Domenica.
