Bishop's Palace in Piazza Armerina
The Bishop's Palace in Piazza Armerina is one of the most important civil buildings in the city.
The exact date of construction is not known, there are conflicting reports that place the construction of the building in 1614 and 1640. According to historical sources, the project of the The building is attributed to Giandomenico Gagini, father of Antonio Gagini.
The facade, in stone ashlars, has a central vertical axis in typically Baroque style. The portal is richly decorated with fine ornaments and is surmounted by the heraldic coat of arms in which an eagle and the face of a putto are depicted.
The main portal leads to an entrance covered by a barrel vault which gives access to the courtyard. The rooms that originally housed the kitchens and stables overlook the courtyard. On the first floor, on the other hand, there are the representative rooms.
The bishop's palace is home to the Diocesan Museum of Piazza Armerina.
