Saracen Quarter in Regalbuto
The Saracen Quarter in Regalbuto, witness of the ancient history of this village, was the first Arab settlement of Regalbuto after the destruction of Rahal butahi. It has managed to preserve the urban layout that the Saracens gave it despite the destruction suffered during the First World War.
The neighborhood is characterized by historic buildings connected to each other by arches with narrow passages under which stairways, streets and bumpy streets. Numerous alleys terminate around an enclosed area, called azikka, i.e. dead end. Other elements that characterize this neighborhood are the barns and balconies that were used for the display of agricultural products.
The particular urban organization of the Saracen neighborhoods arose from the custom of community living of families who, thanks to the presence of these clichés, he had the opportunity to collaborate and satisfy mutual needs with extreme ease.
Particularly characteristic are the walls of the houses plastered in whitewash or left rough, typical of Arab homes.
In this neighborhood there was a large well from which the inhabitants drew water with jugs, before the arrival of drinking water, called u puzzu do Saracinu.
In the houses it is possible to find stone ovens where the families of the neighborhood baked bread and traditional sweets.
