San Michele di Ganzaria

State: CT - Area: Central Sicily

San Michele di Ganzaria is located in the Sicilian hinterland, in a predominantly hilly area, near the Ganzaria mountain, a site of considerable historical interest given the presence of archaeological sites that have allowed the reconstruction of cultural realities from the prehistoric to the Renaissance age.
It is believed that the foundation of the current town took place at the hands of the Arabs around the year 1000, as evidenced by the names of some districts (Favara, Cuba, Giarrizza) with clear Arabic etymology. The farmhouse continued to be inhabited even after the expulsion of the Arabs. In the 16th century the farmhouse was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt at the behest of Antonio Gravina in 1534. It became a municipality in 1812.
