Mother Church in Valguarnera

The Mother Church in Valguarnera, dedicated to San Cristofero Martire, is the main place of worship in the city.
It was built starting from 1626 and was completed at the end of 1800.
The façade has a characteristic curvilinear trend that brings the central block forward. It is divided into two orders, separated by a slightly projecting cornice, and is marked by pilasters. The first order opens with the central portal flanked by pilasters beyond which extend two lateral wings, each with a circular opening. The second order is connected to the first by simple volutes that end with acroterial braziers. In the center, corresponding to the main portal, there is a rectangular window, surrounded by a frame that, in the upper part, has a slight curvature. The second order culminates with a tympanum that is surmounted, in turn, by a mixtilinear attic. It has a small opening that follows the same lines as the window on the second level.
The interior, divided into three naves with five lateral bays, is plastered and decorated with stucco.
Among the works kept inside, of great value is the wooden statue of San Cristofero, protector of Valguarnera, which is believed to have been made in Palermo and given as a gift by the princes of Valguarnera in the 17th century. It represents the giant carrying Baby Jesus on his shoulders as he crosses the river.
