Church of Sant'Antonio in Valguarnera
The Church of Sant'Antonio in Valguarnera Caropepe is a small and ancient place of worship located in the heart of the historic center.
The date of construction of the church is not known but it is certain that it already existed in 1666 as it is mentioned in a historical document.
The building is accessed via two flights of stairs, opposite and parallel to the facade, built in 1877 following the lowering of the street level.
The simple facade has a rectangular compositional scheme. It is delimited by flat pilasters and surmounted by a tympanum. In the center is the portal, in squared stone blocks flanked by pilasters that support a frame. To the left of the facade stands the bell tower with a square base crowned by the bell lodge. It has openings with round arches on the four sides and is surrounded by a gallery with a metal railing. The loggia is surmounted by a cusp roof covered with glazed and painted ceramic tiles.
The interior has a longitudinal nave flanked on the right by a secondary nave and on the left by a side chapel.
Behind the marble altar there is a trap door from which one descends to the crypt below.
