New Year's Eve in Gratteri
Dario Drago - CC1.0
The most beautiful New Year's Eve in Sicily takes place in Gratteri. It is an ancient popular event that takes place every year on the evening of December 31st. The event begins on the evening of December 31st with the sound of the horn and cowbells accompanying the journey of the Old Strina. According to Gratteri tradition, the Old Strina is a witch who lives in the Grattara cave, located at the top of a mountain overlooking the town, and who on the night of December 31st leaves her home in the saddle to a donkey, wrapped in a mysterious white sheet, accompanied by a procession of boys and girls dressed in traditional clothes, and walks through the characteristic narrow streets of the town distributing gifts and sweets to all the children.
This traditional procession ends in the main square of the town with popular dances, tastings of typical local sweets and sparkling wine and ends with spectacular fireworks that illuminate the Madonie and welcome the new year.
