Feast of Our Lady of the Sick
Every year in Misterbianco, on the second Sunday of September, the feast of the Madonna degli Ammalati takes place. It is a religious celebration but also a historical one as it recalls the eruption of March 1669 which destroyed the ancient town. In that eruption only the bell of the Mother Church was saved, which was then recast in the nineteenth century.
The celebrations begin on Thursday evening with the transport of the Bell, from the Bruno family home, near the Mother Church, to the Church of San Nicolò.
The traditional "journey of the bell" takes place on Friday morning: before dawn a procession of faithful accompanies the bell to the sanctuary of the Madonna degli Ammalati, which is about five kilometers from the current center of Misterbianco. This trip recalls the exodus to escape the fire of Etna in 1669. During the escape the inhabitants stopped at the foot of an olive tree and hung the heavy weight of the ancient Matrix on it, so that with its tolls it would help to collect the bell. people wandering in the countryside. Today that tree is known as "laliva 'mpttata".
The celebrations end on Sunday with the procession through the city streets of the painting of the Virgin, donated in the Thirties by the veterans of the war. During the festivities the traditional "Cantata", a hymn to the Virgin, is performed by the inhabitants both on the floor in front of the sanctuary and in the evening during the course of the procession.

Proseguo della processione, alla quale si unisce la Campana, per le vie: Marconi, Garibaldi e arrivo in P.zza delia Repubblica dove sarà ripetuta la "Cantata".
Ripresa della processione per le vie Garibaldi, G. Bruno e rientro in Chiesa Madre.
