Feast of Madonna in Custonaci
The Feast of the Madonna di Custonaci, Patron Saint of Custonaci, takes place from the last Sunday of August until the following Wednesday.
The celebrations begin on Sunday: the mayor of Custonaci recites a prayer of entrustment and delivers the keys of the city to the Saint, followed by the Eucharistic celebration during which the crowns of the 1700s are placed on the head of the Holy Virgin and the child Jesus.
The historical re-enactment of the landing of the Madonna, at the bay of Baia di Cornino, of the sixteenth-century table with the sacred representation. A sailing ship accompanied by various boats delivers the picture of the Madonna to the local sailors, exactly as happened many centuries ago.
The re-enactment of the landing recalls the events that took place, according to tradition, in the sixteenth century, when a ship managed to land near of Cala Burguto, after miraculously managing to save itself from a storm. The ship carried a painting depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary, who had been the object of the prayers of the sailors during the terrible experience they were forced to face.
The Sacred Image is then placed on a cart and carried on the shoulders by the class of masons up to the sanctuary dedicated to her. During the procession, a few meters from the sanctuary, the blessing of the well of the Madonna takes place, in the place where, according to legend, the oxen stopped because they were tired and where water gushed out. A torchlight procession follows which attracts a multitude of faithful.
Tuesday is the day dedicated to vespers and historical-allegorical floats on the life of the Madonna.
On Wednesday the solemn procession takes place through the streets of the city. The pyrotechnic games mark the end of the celebrations and the summer season.
