Feast of Maria SS del Ponte in Caltagirone
In Caltagirone, on 14 and 15 August the celebrations are held in honor of Maria SS del Ponte, one of the main patronesses of the city and pilgrim of the Diocese on the anniversary of her apparition.
According to tradition, the Virgin and Child appeared in the poor district of the bridge, in the water of a spring, just outside the city walls. A painter present fixed the features on a canvas now preserved in the sanctuary.
The program of religious events which on August 14th and 15th have as their destination the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Ponte. On the day of the feast, August 15, Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and anniversary of the apparition, the program opens with the evocative and participatory Mass of the dawn followed by the procession of the Simulacrum of Holy Mary. del Ponte through the main streets of the Parish.
The most evocative event of the festival is the lighting of the Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte which takes place in the evening on 14 and 15 August. The 142 steps are illuminated by 4000 candles or tiles, prepared and colored strictly by hand according to an ancient mastery that is handed down from father to son, creating a great design of lights and colors.
