Feast of Mary SS. of Portosalvo in Marina di Ragusa

The Feast of the Holy Mary. of Portosalvo in Ragusa takes place on August 15th in the seaside resort of Marina di Ragusa, which is located about twenty kilometers from the city.
The event was born as the party that the fishermen organized as thanks to the miraculous Madonna of Portosalvo who was savior of a shipwrecked man during a storm. Today the festival is a moment much attended by both the faithful and the numerous tourists.
The day of celebration begins with the religious celebration. The traditional water games follow. In the late afternoon a large procession moves from the church to the pier below to accompany the statue of the Virgin who is hoisted and embarked on the bow of a fishing boat. The procession of the Madonna sul mare then takes place: the fishing boat, accompanied by many boats, travels along the entire coast while the Madonna of Porto Salvo blesses the seas and sailors. The procession follows through the streets of the town.
