Fraternity and Peace Festival in Casalvecchio Siculo

Fraternity and Peace Festival in Casalvecchio Siculo

The Feast of Fraternity and Peace in Casalvecchio Siculo is an event that commemorates the reconciliation that took place between the two brotherhoods of San Teodoro Martire and the SS. Annunziata.
The origins of the rites linked to this event can be traced back to the resolution of a dispute between the two institutions regarding the priority given in the processions. The dispute reached the Tribunal of the Archimandrital Grand Court of the city of Messina which decided that the oldest founded confraternity, that of San Teodoro, with the title of Archconfraternity, would have precedence over the confraternity of the SS. Annunziata.
To remember and seal the reconciliation that has taken place, the celebrations of the protectors of the respective brotherhoods take place with rites that embody the historical and social meaning of peace. The most significant rite of all the celebrations is the kiss of the banners: the large banners of the two brotherhoods, placed at the two ends of the square, advance slowly towards each other, at the hands of two brothers who, according to custom, have had some animosity during the year and who are thus encouraged to make peace.
These rites originally took place twice a year, on March 25th for the feast of the SS. Annunziata and the eighth Sunday of Easter for the feast of San Teodoro. Today, for demographic reasons, the annual alternation of the same celebrations has been established.
