Feast of San Michele in Palazzolo Acreide
The feast of San Michele Arcangelo in Palazzolo Acreide is celebrated in the month of May and in the month of
September.
The feast which takes place in the month of May recalls the apparition on the Gargano. During the festivities an intense religious program takes place which culminates with the evening procession of the simulacrum of San Michele. The festivities end with a fireworks display.
In Autumn, during the celebrations in honor of San Michele, there is the traditional singing contest Voce dei Piccoli, the Giro di Gala, the launch of traditional hot air balloons, fireworks and music in the square.
The unveiling of the saint's simulacrum takes place amid the cheering cheers of the devotees.
The Saturday preceding the feast the "Giro di Gala" takes place with the parade of banners and flags, the banner, of the band complex, of the flag-waving groups and musicians.
On the morning, around 11 am, there is the launch of the characteristic hot-air balloons made by the members of the committee.
At 1 pm on Sunday the spectacular "Sciuta" of the simulacrum of the saint under a rain of multicolored 'nzareddi ", that is strips of paper, and fireworks. The simulacrum is carried" bare-shouldered "in procession through the streets of the neighborhood, and women traveling barefoot Among the rituals propitiators during the procession there is the denudation of the children who are stripped and raised in front of the statue, entrusting to the protection of the archangel to safeguard them from evils. A second procession with the simulacrum placed on the triumphal chariot, takes place in the evening and ends with the fireworks display.
The solemn octave is held throughout the week, with the "Meeting of the choirs" which animate the Eucharistic celebrations.
