Feast of S. Antonino in Nicolosi
The outdoor festival in honor of the Patron Saint of Nicolosi, Sant'Antonio da Padova, called by the faithful Sant'Antonino, takes place on the second Sunday of August.
The celebrations begin on Saturday when, at the end of the Mass, the procession takes place with the relics of the patron saints of the town: Sant'Antonio di Padova and Sant'Antonio Abate. At the end of the procession, which ends again in the Mother Church, the traditional cantata in honor of the saint takes place. At the end of the cantata, the simulacrum of the Saint is "unveiled", greeted by the waving of white handkerchiefs. The blessing with the relics of the Saint concludes the evening from a religious point of view, while the evening continues with entertainment shows that take place in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.
On Sunday, at 12 noon, the simulacrum of the Saint, placed in the " varetta ”makes the triumphal exit from the Church greeted by the festive sound of the bells, the throwing of multicolored cards and the firing of fireworks. The Sunday morning tour is short and traditional because it winds along the streets where the town once stood buried by the eruptive lavas of 1669, an eruption that almost entirely destroyed it.
In the afternoon the statue of the Saint leaves the Church again to return among the people. The evening tour is much longer than the morning one and touches all the districts of the town. Once placed in the special "varetta", the Saint is carried on the shoulder inside the Church where he is welcomed by the faithful with the singing of hymns and, after the performance of the traditional popular cantata, is placed in his room inside the chapel. votive.
