Feast of Santa Barbara in Sommatino
The Feast of Santa Barbara in Sommatino is the most important religious festival for the village as Santa Barbara is the patron saint of Sommatino. It traditionally takes place on December 4th, the day of the liturgical anniversary.
A history rich in faith and tradition characterizes the festival: Santa Barbara is the protector of miners and Sommatino was known as the sulfur town due to the presence of the large Trabia mine Tallarita. Many miners from Sommatino invoked the protection of the Madonna and organized solemn celebrations in Her honor.
Today the feast of Saint Barbara in Sommatino includes a rich religious program which culminates with the solemn procession of the Simulacrum of the Saint Patron saint of the streets of the village.
On festive days, the Muffoletta Festival is traditionally organized and the Vampa is lit, i.e. a large bonfire in honor of the Patron Saint.
