Corpus Domini in Cefalù
The Fruottula, also called the Bread Festival, represents one of the oldest testimonies of the popular traditions of the village of Cefalù. It takes place every year on the day before the feast of Corpus Domini. It is the legacy of the ancient feast of the Maestranze and the Corporations, which once lasted eight days, and consists of a procession, in which the participation of the Clergy is not expected, of figurative floral compositions preceded by the ancient banners of the Guild of " viddani ", the peasants.
The procession is led by the drummer, the" tammurinaru "who announces the arrival of the procession made up of children holding a stick at the end of which is tied a" cucciddato ", that is bread in the shape of a donut. This procession is followed by a fercolo reproducing a monstrance and some trees whose branches hang early fruits and other compositions made with plants and flowers.
