Easter in Agrigento
The rites of Holy Week in Agrigento are moments of great devotion and great tradition and see the participation of the entire population. The celebrations reach their peak of passion and emotional intensity on Good Friday.
The rites of Holy Week are preceded by the Seven Saturdays, a spiritual journey dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary, organized by the Archconfraternity Maria SS. of the Seven Sorrows.
On Palm Sunday the blessing of palms and olive branches takes place, as well as the traditional procession that ends in the Cathedral.
On Holy Thursday the celebration of the Holy Mass in Coena Domini takes place and, as per tradition, the faithful visit the Holy Sepulchres set up in the churches of the city.
On Good Friday in Agrigento is the most intense moment of all the celebrations in preparation for Holy Easter. During the morning, the evocative procession of the simulacrum of Jesus the Passion takes place, as well as the meeting, at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows, with the sinulacrum of Our Lady of Sorrows. In the afternoon, the representation of the Crucifixion takes place. The most touching moment of the whole day takes place in the evening: the Night Procession of the Dead Christ during which the simulacrum of the Dead Christ kept in a precious urn and the simulacrum of Our Lady of Sorrows are carried in procession, accompanied by evocative funeral songs.
The celebrations end on Easter Sunday with the solemn Eucharistic Celebrations.
