The rites of Holy Week in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto are a cycle of religious events rich in faith, history and tradition. The event is included in the register of Intangible Heritage of the Sicilian Region.
The rites of the Sumana Santa in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto originate during the Spanish domination in Sicily (1516 - 1713) and include numerous moments rich in faith, devotion and folklore.
On Fridays of Lent, the Pious exercises of the Via Crucis take place and the revival of the Song of the Visilla whose text dates back to Early Middle Ages. Palm Sundayis the commemoration of the messianic entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and blessing of the palms.
Holy Thursday12 men, representing the apostles take part in the celebration of the washing of the feet and then begin a pilgrimage to all the churches and tabernacles of the city.
On Good Friday two distinct processions of grandiose statue groups dating back to 1800 reproducing the Mysteries of the Via Crucis, made of wood and papier-mâché and decorated with flowers, followed, as per ancient tradition, by the vissillanti, a group of devotees who sing the Vexilla, an ancient motif built on the verses of the Latin poet Venantius Fortunatus (530-601). The two processions meet, according to ancient tradition, on the streets of the Barcelona bridge.
