Living Nativity of Monterosso Almo 2024

The living nativity scene of Monterosso Almo is one of the oldest nativity scenes in Sicily and has been proclaimed the most beautiful Living nativity scene in Sicily and Italy .
The nativity scene takes place in the maze of alleys of the old quarter, the Matrice quarter of Monterosso Almo. The ancient houses and the narrow streets are once again teeming with life, light and atmospheres of the past. Trades that have now disappeared return to protagonists and re-propose themselves to the new generations.
The nativity scene offers an ethno-anthropological journey into the past that belongs to us. Hundreds of figures animate the living pictures: in the tavern heated by wine, to the sound of the mandolin and the accordion, they sing happily; the stonemason, in his workshop, molds the hard stone with artisan skill; the comarì, in the "cuttighiu", that is, in the "courtyard", show their vast repertoire of idioms; housewives knead bread. The sound of the bagpipes warns that the cave is close: here are the Magi, the donkey, the ox, Mary, Joseph and the Child who is welcomed into the cave every year.
