Rocca della Falconiera in Ustica
The Rocca della Falconiera in Ustica is an archaeological site dating back to Roman times on which, under the Bourbon rule, a fortification was built to defend the island.
The village of Rocca Falconiera dates back to the third century BC. and in it the foundations of several houses are still visible, some of which are troglodyte in shape, some strips of floor in cocciopesto or a mosaic of white tiles, and stairs carved into the rock that connected the various levels of the houses. There are also very large water cisterns dug into the rock capable of capturing rainwater and guaranteeing a water source.
In this area, bronze tools have been unearthed, fragments attributable to ancient houses in which the plaster is well preserved with traces of frescoes attributable to the imperial period.
Rocca della Falconiera is one of the most panoramic points of the island of Ustica. From the fortress it is possible to admire the port, the village and a large part of the island. It is also the ideal place to admire the sunset.
Rocca della Falconiera is part of the Archaeological Route of the Falconiera which also includes the necropolis of the Falconiera and the fort of the Rivellino.
