Canna and Montessari in Filicudi
La Canna is a high column of basaltic rock which stands out to the north west of the coast of the island of Filicudi and is what remains of an ancient active volcanic building in Filicudi about 40,000 years ago. When this volcano stopped erupting, atmospheric agents began to erode its slopes, until they disappeared completely. There was therefore only a tall tower of solidified magma, known as a volcanic plug or neck, more resistant to atmospheric agents, which was originally inside the volcanic conduit.
Of particular interest is one of the subspecies of Aeolian lizard which has adapted to live in this habitat. It is a highly endangered species, as it lives, in addition to the Canna, in only three other stations, such as Strombolicchio, the Scoglio Faraglione di Salina and a few areas of the island of Vulcano.
The seabed around the Canna are extremely suggestive even if the area is not easy to explore due to the currents.
Montenassari is a small islet, located next to the Canna, next to the which is a natural swimming pool filled with sea water. This pool is connected to the opposite end of the islet through a underwater cave a few meters wide at its narrowest point. At the top of Montenassari there is a small solar-powered lighthouse that turns on automatically at dusk.
