Lisca Bianca Island in Panarea
Lisca Bianca is an island belonging to the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands, located near the coasts of Panarea. The island, together with the numerous nearby rocks, like Dattilo, Bottaro, Lisca Nera and others, represents what remains of ancient volcanic vents belonging to the Panarea apparatus, formed about 130,000 years ago. It is likely that in the past these rocks were joined together to form a larger island. The uncontaminated nature of these places has led the regional council to establish the integral nature reserve of the island of Panarea and nearby rocks.
Lisca Bianca, like a thorn lying horizontally on the water, owes its light color to chemical alterations due to acid fumaroles by now extinct. There is still a residual underwater volcanic activity that makes the water boil, a phenomenon that also occurs on the rounded islet of Bottaro and on the north side of Panarea, near the Calcara beach.
The island of Lisca Bianca hosts a plant existing only on this islet and consequently at high risk of extinction, the Anthemis aeolica, commonly called Chamomile of the Aeolian Islands .
