Motta d'Affermo is a small village nestled on the slopes of Monte San Cono, straddling the slopes of the Tusa and Santo Stefano di Camastra rivers, and overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea. Given the privileged position in which the village stands, from it you can enjoy a splendid panorama of the sea, the Aeolian islands and the surrounding mountains.
Its origins date back to the late Roman imperial age and are testified by the presence of a settlement and a necropolis in the “Sorba” area. Subsequently, in the Byzantine era, the hamlet of Sparto was founded. In 1380, Sparto was under the power of the knight Muccio Albamonte alias of Fermo, a mercenary from the Marche, who repopulated the old hamlet of Sparto and proclaimed himself lord and baron of Sparto, which from then on was called Motta di Muccio di Fermo, from whose Motta d'Affermo.

You can obviously taste all the typical products of Sicilian cuisine, the most well-known ones, such as cannoli, Sicilian cassata, arancini, etc. But there are some specialties typical of this area that are more difficult to find in other areas of Sicily.

The main typical products of the agricultural world are the olive tree, from which an excellent oil is obtained, hazelnuts, walnuts, chestnuts and prickly pears.
The dairy products are important: the sweet or spicy canestrato, the pecorino, provola and ricotta.
Among the typical preparations we find omelettes with sciuri l'ovu, a spontaneous cyclamen-coloured flower that blooms in late spring and summer in this area, the cassata, which should not be confused with the traditional Sicilian cassata, is in fact a sort of calzone filled with vegetables, the farinata with wild fennel< /em> and sausage.
During the Easter period, varati are prepared with eggs and cassateddi filled with dried figs. For the feast of Saint Lucia it is traditional to prepare cuccia based on wheat and legumes. During the Christmas period, hazelnut-based rametti and nougat are typical.
