Castle of Motta D'Affermo
The castle of Motta D'Affermo, located at the northern end of the town, is one of the symbols of this medieval village.
It was built in 1260 and it is believed that it visually presided over the entire Alesa river, historic route of penetration towards the interior of Sicily. It was enlarged in 1380 and modified from 1652 to 1668. In 1738 it was covered with stucco. It was partially demolished and rebuilt from 1954 to today.
The renovation carried out from 1955 to 1965 canceled a large part of the original factories that developed around the central courtyard. The new building, although it takes up the unitary volumetric configuration of the old castle, no longer has the massive blind walls but modern plastered and windowed facades.
The only elements that have not been altered by the renovation are the two bastions located at the ends of the front northern.
Of particular interest are the rooms on the ground floor of the original tower, covered by barrel vaults, converted into a chapel and sacristy.
