Shelter of Sperlinga in Novara di Sicilia
Sperlinga, or Cavern.
In the northernmost shelter, in the early 1950s, Dr. Bernabò Brea carried out an excavation campaign which brought to light, in stratigraphic sequence, evidence of life from the neolithic to the early metal age. Pottery and stone tools were found, including some made of obsidian, flint and quartzite, now kept in the archaeological museum of Lipari.
The site is of considerable interest because graffiti have been found on some walls which have been interpreted as a possible calendar.
