Cathedral of San Filippo del Mela
The Cathedral of San Filippo del Mela, dedicated to Saints Philip and James, is the most important building in the village.
Its construction was begun between 1760 and 1768, probably based on a project by Gian Battista Vaccarini, and was completed by the successor of Vaccarini, Don Domenico Gargallo. Between 1883 and 1887 the bell tower was built and the church was enlarged with a new apse. The current neo-Gothic facade, similar to numerous similar examples in the province, dates back to the early twentieth century.
It is an important place of worship that houses numerous works of art of considerable value: the eighteenth-century wooden statues of San Filippo d'Agira and the Madonna del Carmelo, patroness of the town; a large eighteenth-century canvas, placed on the high altar, which depicts the "Virgin with Child between the holy Apostles Philip and James"; a nineteenth-century painting, placed above the door of the sacristy, depicting The primacy of Peter.
