Mother Church in San Fratello
The Mother Church of San Fratello, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, proclaimed Diocesan Sanctuary of San Benedetto il Moro on the occasion of the bicentenary of the canonization of the Saint, is a religious complex that preserves art, the culture, religion and tradition of Sanfratella.
The complex has a largely bare façade, as is the tradition of Franciscan churches. It consists of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, a library from the 1500s and a Franciscan cloister. The ancient Church of Maria Santissima Assunta was completely destroyed by the landslide of 1922 and rebuilt in Acquedolci.
Inside there are works of notable artistic value: the finely inlaid wooden altar-tabernacle enriched by niches with wooden frames mother of pearl; an embossed silver frontal depicting the three holy brothers Alfio, Filadelfio and Cirino; a wooden Crucifix in Flemish style by Brother Umile from Petralia; two Madonnas in white marble from the Gagini school; and a Pietà of great artistic value.
Of particular interest the Cloister of the monastery with frescoes by Brother Emanuele da Como is of particular value.
