 Saponara (ME)

The Castle of Saponara, now reduced to just ruins, is believed to have been a Byzantine structure capable of intercepting all the movements of the invading Arabs from above.
The position in which the castle stands undoubtedly gives the structure a defensive function , rises along the hill overlooking the inhabited center in a strategic position where the advance of the invaders could easily be seen from above, furthermore the hill is particularly steep and steep and this put in difficulty those who dared to advance towards this structure. The castle is in visual contact with the Castello di Venetico
In the ruins of the castle you can easily observe the boundary walls made of stones and bricks. There are particular structures still visible today such as a buttress wall and a quadrangular bulwark, and a tower on the right corner with respect to the quadrangular-plan door but which appears polygonal from the outside. The room inside is roughly square and covered with large bricks and plaster.
