Villafranca Tirrena overlooks the splendid northern Sicilian coast where, in the distance, you can see the Aeolian Islands, while behind it there is a suggestive hilly landscape.
In ancient times, the village was called Bauso: the first historical records date back to 1271, when King Charles of Anjou granted Pierre Gruyer the fief Bàusus. Villafranca Tirrena became an independent municipality in 1825 maintaining the name of Bauso until 1929.
Today the ancient Castle of Bauso dominates the village, which has become a popular tourist destination for its splendid beaches, its monuments and its ancient traditions.
