The Grotta di Carburangeli is a site of considerable speleological, paleontological and biological interest.
The cave extends underground for 400 meters, about 22 meters above sea level, with a horizontal course, showing suggestive environments around 16-18 ° C, between stalactites and stalagmites.
The biological interest is linked to the presence of a colony of bats belonging to the protected species of Vespertilione major.
The paleontological interest of the site is linked to the discovery of numerous finds of Quaternary mammalian faunas now preserved in the “G.G. Gemmellaro ”of Palermo. These animals came to Sicily from the Italian peninsula through natural passages that were formed following the lowering of the sea level during the glacial cycles of the Pleistocene. When these continental bridges were interrupted due to the eustatic rise due to the melting of the ice caps, the faunas that remained isolated underwent adaptation processes that led to a reduction in size of the large species and to an increase in the present case. small size. The excavations in the cave of Carburangeli have also led to the discovery of numerous lithic industries of both the Paleolithic and Neolithic ages, testifying to the fact that, since ancient times, the cave was used by man as a shelter.
The speleological interest of this cave is remarkable: unlike the other underground complexes present in the territory of Carini, such as the Grotta dei Puntali, Carburangeli is the one located at the lowest its extension within the calcarenite deposits and the fluvio-marine conglomerates of the Pleistocene age. The process of percolation of the water through the cracks in the limestone has generated over millions of years all the variety of concretions typical of the karst cavities of temperate-warm climates, managing to create, in the deeper branches of the cave, an evocative environment from geo-naturalistic point of view.
The visit to the cave is regulated and a maximum of 50 visitors per week are allowed, given the fragility of the environment.
