Puntali Cave
The Grotta dei Puntali , located not far from the Carburangeli cave, is a geosite of considerable importance for scientific and naturalistic research.
The cave opens into the Mesozoic limestone of the slopes of Monte Pecoraro, about 90 meters high. The mainly horizontal cavity is set on two different levels connected by not very deep wells. About 30 m from the entrance, the cavity has a yellowish brown deposit, containing fragments of elephant tusks. This deposit represents what remains of the original ossiferous horizon resulting from the excavations carried out by Gemmellaro between 1868 and 1870, which have returned numerous fossil finds of the ancient faunas to mammals that populated Sicily during the Pleistocene: from the dwarf elephant of medium size , the hippopotamus, the hyena and several other artiodactyls, including the bison, the aurochs and the wild boar.
