Ancient Jewish neighborhood in Ciminna
Written testimonies ascertain the presence of a Jewish community in Ciminna, with its own rules managed by a Council of Proti, and with its own Synagogue, the current Church of San Giacomo, which lived in Ciminna until 1493 when Queen Isabella of Spain issued the edict of expulsion of all Jews from Sicily.
In the various places it is possible to retrace the traditions of this community: the Synagogue; in Pintura alley there were the wool dyeing workshops; the small Folletto Belvedere square, located above the Canale stream, in which there was an ancient Gualchiera, i.e. a water mill, used to carry out the fulling of wool, one of the finishing processes of woolen fabrics which consists in compacting the tissue.
