Favaloro Villa in Palermo
The Villino Favoloro in Palermo is considered the first example of European modernism , " Art Nouveau ", in Sicily.
The villa was built between 1889 and 1901 on a project by the architect G.B. Filippo Basile and the Enresto son who was responsible for the enlargement of the rear part of the villa, the insertion of a towering octagonal turret and the construction of a glass and wrought iron structure of imaginative taste, called the "winter garden".
The main facade of the villa, strictly white like the other elevations, is characterized by the lack of architectural orders, by the sinuous and enveloping lines, and above all by the openings that adorn all the openings and the loggia of the upper floor, with their slender neo-Gothic columns, which give lightness to the architecture.
The grandeur of the villa is however enclosed in its interiors where the structural elements blend with the decorative ones. Of great value are the pictorial decorations on the ceiling of the bedroom on the first floor, the fine mosaic tile floors, the splendid wall decorations of the Pompeian room on the ground floor and the elegant library covered with wood paneling.
