Church of San Vito a Piana degli Albanesi
The Church of San Vito Megalomartire in Piana Degli Albanesi , rich in friezes, inlaid altars in polychrome marble, is an example of late Baroque art .
It was built after 1500 and was originally a church of the Greek rite, it was then ceded to the faithful of the Latin rite in 1590.
The façade has a splendid baroque staircase at the end of which there is an eighteenth-century portal, with sides two marble statues depicting the SS. Pietro and Paolo and, in the upper part, two cherubs overlooking the columns. In the central part of the portal you can admire a medallion and at the top a niche that contains the statue of the Immaculate Conception.
The church has three naves with an apse and a side chapel. Inside there are important works of art: the statue of the Immaculate Conception, carved in limestone, stuccoed and inlaid in gold, placed on the central altar in Baroque-style marble; the statue of San Vito martyr dating back to the first half of the sixteenth century, also in stuccoed limestone and covered with gold, placed in the chapel of the left aisle. The Saint is represented with two dogs, the palm of martyrdom and the cross; is the baptismal font in white marble.
