Capo Rama Nature Riserve
The Oriented Natural Reserve of Capo Rama in Terrasini is located on a high limestone cliff and falls into one of the most suggestive and naturalistically interesting stretches of the Sicilian coast, characterized by an expanse of over 5 hectares of maquis with dwarf palm.
The typical flora of the reserve is characterized by the presence of plants such as euphorbia, brambles, ephedra, but above all the dwarf palm , locally known as “< b> scupazzu “because in the past they made handcrafted objects of common use such as brooms and hats. The presence of a wild asparagus is interesting, which in Sicily is present only in Lampedusa.
The high and jagged coast is full of pleasant inlets and panoramic promontories , with numerous caves generated by the concomitant action of marine erosion and karst dissolution.
An ancient watchtower stands on the promontory of the same name: the Torre di Capo Rama . It was part of the sighting system of the coastal towers of Sicily, and is among the oldest existing with a circular layout such as those of Capo Mongerbino and Isola delle Femmine, and was probably built in the fifteenth century at the time of the Aragonese king Martino the younger. < br> The area is also protected by restrictions of archaeological, ethno-anthropological and paleontological interest due to the presence of the Cala Porro cave and its content of historical and scientific importance and the presence of rich rocks of fossils, among which the shells of Megalodons prevail, large lamellibranchs and typical Triassic guide fossils, as well as remains of marine gastropods, corals and other encrusting organisms that populated the seabed.
