Mother Church of Monterosso Almo
The Mother Church of Maria Santissima Assunta is the oldest religious building in the city of Monterosso Almo and has long been declared a National Monument. From the studies carried out on the materials used for the flooring it is believed that this dates back to around the year 1000. This makes the Mother Church of Monterosso Almo one of the oldest religious buildings in Sicily to be still active.
The 1693 earthquake of Val di Noto also seriously damaged the Mother Church of Monterosso Almo causing the total collapse of the right aisle. Following this catastrophic event, the building was subjected to reconstructions, restorations and extensions that gave it its present appearance.
The Mother Church of Maria Santissima Assunta in Monterosso Almo is in neo-Gothic style even if there are elements that recall the romantic style.
The rusticated facade is divided into four orders: the first three have a regular and square shape, with entrance portals and domed windows, and with two large clocks on the sides; the fourth order has a pyramidal shape which also acts as a bell tower.
The interior is divided into three naves separated by columns.
Among the works of art kept inside the church of particular value are: a wooden crucifix fifteenth century and a baptismal font dating back to the year 1000. There are also numerous paintings and statues dating back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
