Church of Sant'Antonio Abate in Monterosso Almo
The Church of Sant'Antonio Abate of Monterosso Almo, also known as the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima Addolorata or the Diocesan Sanctuary of the Addolorata, is a small religious building declared a National Monument. The date of construction of the original structure is not known. of the church but it is known that this was destroyed following the terrible earthquake of 1693 in the Val di Noto. The church of Sant'Antonio Abate was then rebuilt after the earthquake: important artists of the time participated in the rebuilding of the building who embellished the church with works of art of high artistic value.
The simple single-order facade is enriched by the entrance portal with valuable high reliefs, surrounded by two columns surmounted by Corinthian capitals. At the top of the façade there is a bell structure in which there are three small bells.
The interior, with a single nave, is enriched by works of art, paintings and frescoes of particular artistic importance. Of particular value are: the Altarpiece of the Martyrdom of San Lorenzo, the Baptism of Constantine and the Madonna del Carmelo.
