Necropolis of Mirio in Santa Croce Camerina
The Necropoli del Mirio are an archaeological area located in Santa Croce Camerina . It is a rare example of an " open-air " necropolis, in fact there are over one hundred tombs obtained by digging the limestone soil.
The Necropolis of Mirio was used starting from the third century, period during which the Romans settled in these places for the first time. In this place a first urban settlement was founded which, subsequently, began the foundation of the city of Santa Croce Camerina. The Necropolis of Mirio was used until the seventh century, when the control of Sicily was under the Byzantine dominion.
The tombs present in the necropolis have the articularity of having different dimensions, which indicates that both adults and children were buried in the necropolis . Among the most evocative tombs of the Necropolis of Mirio there is a bomb in Thòlos , a particular sepulchral monument with a circular and domed shape, dating back to the Bronze Age, from which the probable presence of some figures of relief for the village that was buried in these places.
