Church of Santa Maria La Nova in Scicli
The Church of Santa Maria La Nova di Scicli, located at the bottom of the quarry of the same name, is the largest building of worship in the city.
According to some sources, the Marian cult in this site dates back to Byzantine age, in fact, there is talk of the existence of a small church dedicated to Sancta Maria Pietatis that some scholars today simply assimilate with the existing church. The history of the church has gone through complex events, but it has always been supported by its Confraternity.
The neoclassical-style facade-tower is the result of a vast plugging of the eighteenth-century facade, with portico and loggia.
L ' inside, the result of the last major reconstruction, with a single nave, it has three domed and communicating chapels on each side. The deep quadrangular choir by Giuseppe Venanzio Marvuglia concludes the great hall. The entire complex is rich in sculptures, paintings and relics.
In 1878, ancient and precious manuscripts were discovered in the Archconfraternity archive, including the Sciclitani Codices.
Annex at the church there is the "Garden of San Guglielmo", with the homonymous church and the trunk of the cypress that tradition has it planted by the saint.
