Sanctuary of the Madonna del Balzo in Bisacquino
The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Balzo in Bisacquino is of great religious importance and is a pilgrimage destination for many faithful.
The church, to which a hermitage is connected, was built on Mount Triona in a dominant position from which you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama.
According to tradition, the Sanctuary stands in the place where there was a stone on which the image of the Madonna was depicted. Following a miraculous event it was decided to erect the sanctuary in this place.
The church was built in 1679 and over time it has been enriched with stuccos and decorations of all kinds .
The effigy of the Madonna, first set in the rock, was walled up inside the church in 1681 by order of Canon Bartolomeo Di Giorgio. The image of the madonna on the altar was later reproduced by a priest who had seen the real image of the madonna. Almost in the center of the hermitage a bell tower was built, which was later enriched by a clock which today keeps the time and whose sound spreads throughout the valley.
The road that leads to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Balzo up to the ancient neviere, natural cavities in which it was customary to store snow throughout the summer with only the help of straw and where refrigerators did not yet exist.
