Mother Church in Campobello di Mazara
The Mother Church of Campobello di Mazara, dedicated to Maria Selinuntina della Neve, is the main building of worship in the city and with its large size it stands out along the main street.
The original construction dates back to 1587. In 1715 a new church was built on the bases of the ancient structure but of larger dimensions. The constant increase in the population gave rise to the need to further expand the structure of the church: in 1825 according to the design and direction of the architect Sacchetti, thanks also to the contribution of the citizens, the church was further enlarged and remodeled until it took on the appearance today.
The church, as it is located along a slope, stands on a high churchyard with a wide access staircase which emphasizes its development in height.
The façade, in neoclassical style, is made of cut stone covered with plaster, is marked by flat pilasters of classical style, and is divided into two orders by a string course cornice with linear mouldings. On the first order there is the central arched portal surmounted by a richly worked stone coat of arms, and the two smaller side portals with pilasters surmounted by scroll capitals and a tympanum. On the right stands the bell tower which creates a strong asymmetry due to the lack of the left tower, designed but never built.
The church, with three naves with transept and decorations, has nine altars, of which the main one is dedicated to the Saint Patron Saint Vito Martyr.
Among the works kept in the church of particular artistic value are: the wooden statue, covered with a precious silver foil, depicting the Patron Saint San Vito Martire dating back to the 18th century; two valuable canvases depicting Saint Peter and the Sacred Heart of Mary.
