Archeological area of Mokarta in Salemi
The Archaeological Area of Mokarta in Salemi represents one of the most important evidence of prehistoric times in Sicily .
The remains of a village , dating back to the Late Bronze Age, consisting of circular huts with double entrances. Along the sides of the hill a vast necropolis was found with about a hundred cave tombs carved into the rock where some bodies and simple objects made up of vases were found.
There are evident traces in the village. of destruction that led to the hypothesis of its abandonment, which took place around the 10th century. BC, following a traumatic event. It is believed that it may be an incursion of external Elymian populations, who settled in the western part of Sicily at that time. To support this hypothesis was the discovery, at the entrance to one of the huts, of the skeleton of a young woman who is believed to have been trapped by the collapse of the roof during the escape.
