Archaeological Area of Adranon
The Greek settlement of Adranon , located on Mount Adranone, a relief north of the municipality of Sambuca di Sicilia, houses the remains of the ancient city of Adranon.
The ancient city of Adranon was a Greek-Punic settlement dating back to the early fifth century BC, colonized by Selinunte in the sixth century BC, conquered by Carthage in the fourth century BC. and destroyed, according to archaeological excavations, around the third century BC. by Romans. Inside the archaeological area we find: the necropolis , in which the monumental Tomba della Regina stands out; the artisan and commercial district; the inhabited center where you can admire the remains of houses, sacred areas, warehouses, shops, cisterns; the acropolis where there is a sanctuary surrounded by a temenos, preceded by a chapel where the votive offerings of the faithful were collected; at the foot of the Acropolis was a sacred area with a rectangular, bipartite building where the presence of two betyls reveals belonging to the Punic religious matrix. The perimeter of the city is made up of a mighty city wall about 15 km long which underwent various building phases linked to the history of the center: the monumental remains of the South and North Doors are in light, flanked by turrets .
