Sambuca di Sicilia Stone Quarries
The Sambuca di Sicilia stone quarries are located in the inhabited area of ancient Zabut . The tuff quarries , also known as " purrere ", are very suggestive underground environments and are located under every building in the Arab quarter. Under each house there was in fact a "purrera" from which the tuff was quarried to build the houses. Thus, over time, a dense underground network of tunnels and large rooms has been created.
Only in 2015 was there confirmation of the existence of the purras with the opening of the access to the purrera in piazza Saraceni which, located 12 meters deep, today represents one of the few accessible purras .
