Hippodrome of the Mediterranean in Cassibile
The Racecourse of the Mediterranean of Syracuse stands on an area of approximately 55 hectares, located in the territory of Cassibile, at the foot of the eastern edge of the Ibleo Plateau.
It was inaugurated on December 8, 1995, in the presence of the major institutional leaders, civil and military, and to the twenty thousand people gathered. On that occasion, three icons of world horse racing were on the track: the jockeys Lester Piggott, John Riddle and Willie Carson.
The design of the racecourse is inspired by the most recent developments that this type of sports facilities has had in international scope. The south side of the racecourse bears the most representative and introverted stamp, the face that the building presents and with which it welcomes; the large central partition in exposed concrete, with the Hippodrome logo and the clock, gives architectural form to the civic inspiration, surrounded by large glazed openings and pure stereometric volumes that structure the façade, such as the glass stair towers at the ends , the large rectangular oculus on the second floor of the West building, the bridge overhang of the third floor of the East building and the cantilevered crowning cornice, which closes the façade following its horizontal development.
