Things to do, attractions, interesting facts
State: SR - Area: Siracusa surroundings
Lentini, located on the slopes of the Iblei mountains in the San Marco Valley, is a cultural and artistic center of considerable interest.
Its origin is shrouded in myth, its history is long and tortuous: the ancient settlement, Leontinoi, it was founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC. In 476 BC. it was attacked by Hiero of Syracuse and fell under his power. The dominion of Syracuse was followed by that of the Romans, then of the Muslims, the Normans, the Swabians, the Angevins and the Aragonese. In 1693 it was destroyed by the terrible earthquake of Val Di Noto. It was then slowly rebuilt.
The new city, built on the rubble of the earthquake, presents the typical canons of the Sicilian Baroque. The archaeological park bears witness to its long history.
Lentini is surrounded by citrus groves. Among its typical products, the blood orange of Sicily stands out. Another typical product is Lentini bread, obtained from a very laborious manufacturing process.
