Tuna Fish of Marzamemi
The Tonnata di Marzamemi is one of the oldest and most important in Sicily .
The origins of the historic Tonnara di Marzamemi are very ancient and date back to the Arabs, who around year one thousand they planted what would become the most important Tonnara in eastern Sicily. The real development of the Tonnara, however, took place in 1752, when Prince Nicolaci di Villadorata decided to build the village of Marzamemi and there his residence, the Palazzo di Villadorata, to manage trade and economic activities, mainly focused on fishing. and on the processing of tuna. The first tuna production plant dates back to 1912 and remained active until the Second World War.
For more than thirty years the activity of the Tonnara has been suspended. The old factory is now used as a reception room.
The "Sceri" of the tonnara, ie the rooms that originally served as a shelter for the large boats of the Tonnara, have now been transformed into the "Loggia", a single large room of about 750 square meters. crossed by ancient tuff arches and overlooking the sea and the old fishing port.
