Mother Church in Fiumefreddo di Sicilia
The Mother Church in Fiumefreddo di Sicilia, dedicated to Maria Santissima Immacolata, is the main building of worship in the town.
It was built in 1862 in neo-classical style. Originally with a nave, it was subsequently enlarged with the addition of two naves and the bell tower located in the rear part of the building.
The façade, made entirely of white stone, is punctuated by composite style pilasters and divided in two orders from a string course frame. Three portals open on the first order, the central one, which is larger, is surmounted by an entablature with a frieze finely decorated with floral motifs. The portals are surmounted by bas-reliefs which recall the miracles attributed to the Immaculate Conception.
On the second order, inserted in the façade, stands the original bell tower with two arches covered with majolica. The second bell tower, 36 meters high, built after the original structure, ends with the statue of the Immaculate Virgin, a fiberglass copy of the statue venerated inside the church.
The interior, divided into three naves, houses the valuable statue of the Immaculate Conception, carved from a single wooden trunk.
Of particular value is the chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception decorated with the artist's valuable frescoes Primo Panciroli depicting the mystery of the Virgin Mary.
